Those To Come ~ The Shins
http://www.stud.uni-goettingen.de/~s275288/graphics/Shins%20Chutes.jpeg
"Eyeless in the morning sun you were Pale and mild, a modern girl Taken with thought, still prone to care Makin tea in your underwear You went out in the yard to find
Something to eat and clear your mind Something bad inside me went away
Quaking leaves and broken light Shifting skin the coming night The bearers of all good things arrive Climb inside us, twist and cry A kiss on your molten eyes
Myriad lives like blades of grass Yet to be realized, bow as they pass
They are cold, Still, Waiting in the ether, To form, Feel, Kill, Propagate, Only to die
They are cold, Still, Waiting in the ether, To form, Feel, Kill, Propagate, Only to die
Dissolve Magically, Absurdly, They'll end, Leave, Dissipate, Coldly And strangely Return"
One of my favorite songs written by the The Shins, Those to Come is poignant, poetic, and artistic song with a great melody. Like many other songs The Shins write, Those to come is filled with clever lyrics, with impeccable word choice. The flow and rythem of the lines is also very easy to listen to. The phrase "Taken with thought, still prone to care"
is wonderful. I love the intonation placed on the words, especially when listening to the song. The general structure of the song, with the last part of the song short phrases is very well done. The lines "They are cold, Still, Waiting in the ether, To form, Feel, Kill, Propagate, Only to die"
Are beautiful. In the song, rythmically The Shins have nailed this song, and it is overall a very good listen.

World On Fire ~ Sarah Mclachlan

"Hearts are worn in these dark ages Youre not alone in these stories pages The light has fallen amongst the living and the dying And Ill try to hold it in Yeah Ill try to hold it in
The worlds on fire its more then I can handle Ill tap into the water try and bring my share Try to bring more, more then I can handle Bring it to the table Bring what I am able
I watch the heavens but I find no calling Something I can do to change whats coming Stay close to me while the skys falling I dont wanna be left alone dont wanna be alone
The worlds on fire its more then I can handle Ill tap into the water try and bring my share Try to bring more, more then I can handle Bring it to the table Bring what I am able
Hearts break hearts mend love still hurts Visions clash planes crash still theres talk of saving souls still colds closing in on us
We part the veil on our killer sun Stray from the straight line on this short run The more we take the less we become The fortune of one man means less for some
The worlds on fire its more then I can handle Ill tap into the water try and bring my share Try to bring more, more then I can handle Bring it to the table Bring what I am able"
World On Fire is a good example of Sarah Mclachlan's talent in lyrical writing. This song is filled with illusions of peace and disastor. I like how there was an refrence to September 11th in the lines : "Visions clash planes crash still theres talk of saving souls still colds closing in on us"
Another favorite section of the song are the lines :
"We part the veil on our killer sun Stray from the straight line on this short run The more we take the less we become The fortune of one man means less for some"
in perticular the line about fortune of one man having more meaning for one person then the other. This line is very poignant. And i like how Sarah addresses the social issue of poverty.

Sunrise ~ Norah Jones
"Sunrise, sunrise Looks like mornin' in your eyes But the clocks held 9:15 for hours Sunrise, sunrise Couldn't tempt us if it tried 'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone
And I said hoo... To you
Surprise, surprise Couldn't find it in your eyes But I'm sure it's written all over my face Surprise, surprise Never something I could hide When I see we made it through another day
And I said hoo... To you
Now good night Throw its cover down On me again Ooh and if I'm right It's the only way To bring me back
Hoo... To you Hoo..."
Sunrise is in my opinion, the best song Norah Jones has wrote. Not only is the piano and backup music beautiful, but with the combination of her voice and the passionate lyrics the tune is overall very good.
The opening lines:
"Sunrise, sunrise Looks like mornin' in your eyes But the clocks held 9:15 for hours Sunrise, sunrise Couldn't tempt us if it tried 'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone"
are some of the best in the song. The line about sunrise in your eyes is very touching. The whole first section is pretty and sweet. It is very sureal, as it is easy to picture the morning atmosphere of to lovers in bed. Come to think of it, the entire song, lyrics, vocals and backup music all give a very true and sureal sound and image. However, it is hard to get the full effect of the lyrics unless u listen to the song ... so here is the song link + video... for all of you who care :-)

Across The Great Divide ~ Nanci Griffith

"I've been walkin' in my sleep Countin' troubles 'stead of countin' sheep Where the years went I can't say I just turned around and they've gone away
I've been siftin' through the layers Of dusty books and faded papers They tell a story I used to know And it was one that happened so long ago
It's gone away in yesterday Now I find myself on the moutainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide
Now, I hear the owl a-callin' Softly as the night was fallin' With a question and I replied But he's gone across the borderline
It's gone away in yesterday Now I find myself on the moutainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide
The finest hour that I have seen Is the one that comes between The edge of night and the break of day It's when the darkness rolls away
It's gone away in yesterday Now I find myself on the moutainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide
It's gone away in yesterday Now I find myself on the moutainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide"
Nanci Griffith has a girly, vibrant, wispiness that is reflected in her lyrics and music. It is difficult to describe the type of music she performs. It is a touch country, with a strong folk sound.
Her poetic songs, leave you feeling energized and upbeat. Although her music is some what repetitive, this song in perticular is one of her best.
one of my favorite parts of the song is :
"I've been siftin' through the layers Of dusty books and faded papers They tell a story I used to know And it was one that happened so long ago"
The word choice, and emphasis she places on certain words when she sings the song is very poetic. The chorus as well is very well sung and well written.
" It's gone away in yesterday Now I find myself on the moutainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide "

i forgot to add a picture of Joni... so here you go...

Both Sides Now ~ Joni Mitchell
"Rows and floes of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons ev’rywhere I’ve looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on ev’ryone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It’s cloud illusions I recall I really don’t know clouds at all
Moons and junes and ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way you feel As ev’ry fairy tale comes real I’ve looked at love that way
But now it’s just another show You leave ’em laughing when you go And if you care, don’t let them know Don’t give yourself away
I’ve looked at love from both sides now From give and take, and still somehow It’s love’s illusions I recall I really don’t know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud To say I love you right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I’ve looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say I’ve changed Well something’s lost, but something’s gained In living ev’ry day
I’ve looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It’s life’s illusions I recall I really don’t know life at all I’ve looked at life from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It’s life’s illusions I recall I really don’t know life at all"
Both sides now is one of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs, and generally one of my favorite songs. Her beautiful voice, moving lyrics matched with her amazing guitar work makes for a truely delicious folk song :-). One of my favorite aspects of the song is how Joni describes clouds, life and love. These three choices for blend well and are easily incorporated into a song. The song reminds me of a seemless patchwork blanket. Partially becauase of her stunning voice, but also the emphasis on certain phrases, and the perfect word choice.
The begining of the song is so well worded "Rows and floes of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons ev’rywhere I’ve looked at clouds that way" Overall this song is amazing and is a must for folk junkies :-).

Rapture ~ By iiO

"...
The night I laid my eyes on you I felt everything around me move Got nervous when you looked my way But you knew all the words to say
And your love slowly moved right in All this time, oh my love, where you been
Mi amore Don't you know My love I want you so Sugar You make my soul complete Rapture tastes so sweet
I'm mesmerised in every way You keep me in a state of daze Your kisses make my skin feel weak Always melting in your heat
Then I sore like a bird in the wind Oh I glide like I'm flying through heaven
Mi amore Don't you know My love I want you so Sugar You make my soul complete Rapture tastes so sweet
Mi amore Don't you know My love I want you so Sugar You make my soul complete Rapture tastes so sweet
...
Mi amore Don't you know My love I want you so Sugar You make my soul complete Rapture tastes so sweet
Mi amore Don't you know My love I want you so Sugar You make my soul complete Rapture tastes so sweet
..."
Rapture by iiO was on the of most popular pop / house hits of 2002. One of the reasons i choose this song is becuase of the stunning vocals, mixed with easy flowing, pleasent lyrics.
Blended with smooth base and soulful electronic background music, the love song lyrics captivate the listener.
The begining of the song is one of the most powerful and meaninful parts. the part: "The night I laid my eyes on you I felt everything around me move Got nervous when you looked my way But you knew all the words to say
And your love slowly moved right in All this time, oh my love, where you been"
Is a very true testimate as to how people respond to lust, love and passion. Generally, the song Rapture is a nice love song (lyrics). The type of music many wouldnt like :P

Theme:
Seeing as we have to do a theme for this poetry blog. I will be doing my blog with the theme of poetry in song, more specifically song lyrics and music and writing.
My first choice Amsterdam by Coldplay is inspired by the release of their new album.

Amsterdam
Come on, my star is fading And I swerve out of control If I, if I'd only waited I'd not be stuck here in this hole
Come here, my star is fading And I swerve out of control And I swear I waited and waited I've got to get out of this hole
But time is on your side It's on your side now Not pushing you down and all around no It's no cause for concern
Come on, oh my star is fading And I see no chance of release And I know I'm dead on the surface But I am screaming underneath
And time is on your side It's on your side now Not pushing you down And all around, no It's no cause for concern
Stuck on the end of this ball and chain And I'm on my way back down again Stood on a bridge tied to a noose Sick to the stomach You can say what you mean But it won't change a thing I'm sick of our secrets Stood on the edge, tied to the noose You came along and you cut me loose You came along and you cut me loose You came along and you cut me loose
------------------------------------------
There are a number of reasons why i choose this perticular song. The phraseology of the lyrics is very well done. A few examples of this are in lines:
"Come on, oh my star is fading And I see no chance of release And I know I'm dead on the surface But I am screaming underneath"
This piece of the song is extremely moving and expresses great emotion. Generally alot of coldplays lyrics have a very touching, moving and inspiring nature. The song Amsterdam has many illusions to death, weakness and love. The section of lines i choose to look at are very typical of the song. Through the lyrics the listener is told about a harsh relality a persons turmoil.
The ending of the song is also very moving. As the song builds, telling of a inner struggle, it ends with the resolution of the troublesome emotions.
"Stood on the edge, tied to the noose You came along and you cut me loose You came along and you cut me loose You came along and you cut me loose"

Ron Silliman's Blog http://ronsilliman.blogspot.com/

Ron Silliman's blog is a very extensive and comprehensive approach to poetry blogs. On his blog there is tremendous amounts of research and information relating to modern poets and poetry. With entries dedicated to contemporary poets, as well as a blog to host his own poetry, Ron offers critiques and dialogues on his website. Silliman's blog has hundreds of posts as well as a full archive section of all past entries. There are some very good links to websites with information about Ron Silliman. One good site in particular is http://epc.buffalo.edu/authors/silliman/ ... Not only does Ron Silliman include writings about poetry, but he also includes pictures and quotes from his favourite poets.
Rolling Thunder ~ Poetry and Art Blog http://www.splashhall.org/thunder_blog.html
Rolling Thunder is a very light-hearted, pleasant and welcoming poetry blog. Although the main writing section includes stories, dialogues, critiques and poetry, this blog is very well done and is well organized. The site is edited by a number of avid poetry fans. There are a number of links to everything from fair trade coffee to other poetry fan sites such as Poetry Sanctuary. Generally i like how this blog is very pleasant to look at and how it includes many links to other reliable poetry websites.
Marcs Poetry Blog http://www.marcgunn.com/poetry/ Although this blog is not appealing to look at, it does have well thought out, and creative content. Generally, the blog is filled with Marc Gunn's poetry and writings. Unlike the other two links i have posted, Marc's poetry blog is mostly focussed on his own works. Supplementing the lack of aesthetic appearance, Marc offers pictures, and MP3's that he feels compliment his poetry. This i found to be very appealing. Also included in his blog are some interesting articles and a journal. All in all I think that Marcs blog is the weaker of the three links posted, however, it is still a good site to check out.
